The former GOP Rep. became the sixth lawmaker ever to be expelled from the chamber last year. He is also facing federal charges.

Santos was expelled after deceiving voters with lies and exaggerations about his biography. He also allegedly filed fraudulent fundraising reports to obtain financial support for his previous campaign. He is accused of repeatedly charged the credit cards of campaign contributors without authorization as well.

Santos has pleaded not guilty to all 23 charges he faces and will now enter a battleground contest to challenge a Republican Congressman in New York.
