George Hicks, Sr.
“To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;” Ecclesiastes 3: 1-2 Mr. George “Deeda Boy” Hicks, Sr., the son of George Ham, Sr. and Lucille Hicks, was born in Florence, South Carolina on August 28, 1933. He entered into eternal rest on Sunday, September 26, 2010 to be with the Lord. “Deeda Boy”, as he was affectionately called, attended the public schools of Florence County and retired from the South Carolina Department of Transportation. At an early age, he was baptized and became a member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church. George was married to Evelena Brown Hicks for 53 years. This union was blessed with six children. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a son, James Hicks; and two brothers, Kenly “Brotha” Green and Jerry Green, Sr. His memory will be cherished by: his children, George, Jr. (Marla) Hicks, Richard Hicks, Kenneth (Gladys) Hicks, Teresa (Jimmy) Commander, all of Florence, SC; and Jennifer (Greg) Ellerbe of Lawrenceville, GA; ten grandchildren; six great grandchildren; four sisters, Lula Bell Brown, Bertha Bowens, Anne Sutton, all of Baltimore, MD; and Diane Font of Winston-Salem, NC; one brother, Stanley Green of Baltimore, MD; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
