S.C. Court Puts Alex Murdaugh’s Appeal Under Suspension

Murdaugh's lawyers argue that the clerk was motivated by a desire to secure a book deal and media appearances, neither of which would have been possible if the proceedings had ended in a mistrial over a split jury.

Alex Murdaugh’s legal team won a victory from South Carolina’s Supreme Court.

The disbarred lawyer was convicted of murder in connection to the deaths of his wife, Maggie and son, Paul who were both shot to death in June of 2021.

On Tuesday, the Palmetto State’s top court granted Murdaugh’s motion to hold his appeal under suspension until the circuit court addresses his allegation that the clerk at his murder trial, Becky Hill, pressured jurors to find him guilty.

Murdaugh’s lawyers also argue that Hill was motivated by a desire to secure a book deal and media appearances, neither of which would have been possible if the proceedings had ended in a mistrial over a split jury. Hill is accused of betraying her oath of office for money and fame.

The recent ruling could now allow Murdaugh to request a re-trial. If denied, he will resume his appeal of his original conviction and sentence for the murder charges.
