The IRS Is Set To Launch Its Own Tax Filing Program

Opposers argue that a government-run system would provide a worse taxpayer experience and that the federal tax collector should not also play a role of tax preparer.

The IRS is set to launch its own free tax filing program.

The agency’s tax filing system would serve as an alternative to private tax preparation companies such as H&R Block and TurboTax. Starting this coming tax season only tax payers in 13 states with specific tax situations will be able to participate through an online pilot as a test run of the new program.

Opposers argue that a government-run system would provide a worse taxpayer experience and that the federal tax collector should not also play a role of tax preparer.

The IRS stated that the ‘Direct File’ program would simply just be another option for taxpayers to help them navigate through the tax season.
