A landlord in the Chicago area has been arrested and charged with murder and hate crimes.

On Saturday, authorities responded to a residence in Will County of Illinois, nearly 40 miles southwest of Chicago. A woman called and reported that her landlord attacked her and her son. The two victims were found in a bedroom, each with multiple stab wounds. The 6-year-old boy was stabbed 26 times and succumbed to his injuries. 32-year-old Hannan Shahin is currently being treated at a hospital and is expected to survive.

Investigators determine the victims were ‘targeted by the suspect due to them being Muslim and the ongoing Middle Eastern conflict involving Hamas and Israelis’. 71-year-old Joseph Czuba was charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, two counts of a hate crime and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
