In this heat and humidity, sometimes water isn’t enough to keep us healthy. If you’re active in these type of temperatures you can lose liters of water per hour. That’s why experts recommend adding electrolytes if you’re going to be sweating for more than an hour. Not restoring those levels can lead to dangerously low sodium in the blood. Electrolyte imbalance is more common than you may think. Dehydration is one of the biggest culprits. Recent data suggests 75% of us are dehydrated in one way or another. There are several things we can do to combat it. We can include more foods with types of electrolytes like potassium, sodium chloride, magnesium, calcium found in foods like bananas, oranges, collard greens, cheese, meats, nuts and beans. Coconut water is a good choice as it has natural electrolytes. When we become dehydrated, water isn’t enough. At that point, we need a balanced ratio of glucose and electrolytes so it can be absorbed properly. Plain water absorbs slowly and too much sugar slows absorption of water as well. Beware of sugary drinks. Instead, look for low sugar options with minimal artificial sweeteners. Smart Water, Liquid IV and Drip Drop are popular examples. Reading labels is important. There’s a new product on the market. Vitapod uses a pod system to add nutrients to water. We received the starter bundle to try. The package includes an on-the-go bottle where you insert a pod that releases a flavored mix to the water with a twist. The starter bundle that includes the water bottle and a sampler pack of 30 pods is about $50. There is a quiz you can take to find the right drink for you.
