Hermits Peak, Calf Canyon Wildfires Continue to Grow in New Mexico
More than 15,000 homes will be threatened if wildfires in Hermits Peak and Calf Canyon in New Mexico continue to grow. The area also includes the city of Las Vegas, New Mexico and the surrounding communities in San Miguel and Mora counties. Currently, five fires are burning throughout six counties in the state as much of New Mexico has been under a severe drought. The blaze which combines the Hermits Peak and Calf Canyon wildfires merged over a week ago and burned more than 146,000 acres, destroyed 172 homes and caused the evacuation of more than 6,000 residences. That fire is only 20% contained.
