Cristiano Ronaldo Announces Retirement From Portuguese National Team
Ronaldo will continue his club career with Saudi Pro League team, Al-Nassr FC, through the end of his June 2027 contract.
Cristiano Ronaldo has officially announced his retirement from international football.
The soccer star retires as Portugal’s all-time leading goalscorer. He netted 146 goals in 234 appearances and guided his country to their first-ever European Championship victory in 2016.
Ronaldo’s announcement came just before the national team revealed the squad for the upcoming Nations League. He chose to break the news first through his social media. He read a letter that thanked everyone and said it was not an easy decision to make.
Ronaldo’s decision to step away from international football follows weeks of public disputes with Portugal’s coaching staff. The move ends his 23-career career with the Portugal national team. However, despite rumors, the athletic icon has not completely retired from football all together. Ronaldo will continue his club career with Saudi Pro League team, Al-Nassr FC, through the end of his June 2027 contract.
