U.S. Ban On Certain Canadian Goods Takes Effect

The move further escalates tensions in a trade war between the U.S. and its longtime ally and North American neighbor.

President Trump’s ban on nearly $1 billion worth of Canadian goods took effect Tuesday.

The restrictions include Canadian dairy products, motor vehicles, and many alcoholic beverages. When Trump signed the executive orders to ban the goods, he cited Canadian “discrimination” against the American equivalents.

The ban was enacted under section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930. The move further escalates tensions in a trade war between the U.S. and its longtime ally and North American neighbor.

Last month, Trump slapped 50% tariffs on $27.6 billion worth of Canadian products, prompting Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government to match with “dollar for dollar” tariffs.
