Trump Touts Changing Lake Ontario Name To Lake America
The comments come as trade tensions between Washington and Canada have escalated into a trade war after failed talks.
President Trump said his administration is considering changing the name of Lake Ontario.
“The United States is giving serious consideration to changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America in that we don’t expect to doing much business with Ontario any longer,” Trump posted to Truth Social.
The comments come as trade tensions between Washington and Canada have escalated into a trade war after failed talks between Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
The U.S. has now imposed 50% tariffs on Canadian goods with Canada set to impose retaliatory tariffs “dollar for dollar” on U.S. goods by September.
Trump’s renaming proposal is not the first time he sought to rename a body of water bordering the U.S. and another country. Last year, Trump signed an executive order renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.
