Ways to Keep Your Phone Battery Healthier for Longer
The good news is you don’t have to completely change how you use your phone...
We ask a lot of our phones every day, but a few common habits could be causing the battery to age faster than it needs to. The good news is you don’t have to completely change how you use your phone to help keep its battery healthier for longer.
1. Avoid extreme temperatures
Heat is one of the biggest enemies of lithium-ion batteries. Try not to leave your phone in direct sunlight, a hot car or other warm environments, and if it gets unusually hot while charging, give it a chance to cool down.
2. Don’t always charge it to 100%
Keeping your battery at a full charge for long periods can put additional stress on it. Using features that limit charging to around 80%, when available, can help reduce that strain and potentially slow battery aging.
3. Try not to let the battery completely die
You don’t need to wait until your phone hits zero before plugging it in. Smaller, more frequent charges are generally easier on a lithium-ion battery than repeatedly draining it completely and then charging it all the way back up.
4. Take advantage of optimized charging features
Many newer phones have built-in settings designed specifically to protect battery health. Features such as optimized or adaptive charging can learn your routine and delay charging beyond 80% until closer to when you normally unplug your phone.
5. Be mindful of how you charge
Use a reliable, compatible charger and pay attention to heat while your phone is plugged in. Poor-quality chargers can contribute to excess heat, while a good charger that meets your phone’s specifications can properly regulate the power being delivered to the battery.
