Suspicious Package Prompts Evacuation At Florence Co. Sheriff’s Office

The Florence County Sheriff’s Office’s law enforcement center in Effingham was evacuated Wednesday.
The evacuation came out of an abundance of caution after a “suspicious package” was found in the forensic unit of the sheriff’s office.
The package turned out to be a pipe bomb. The device was brought into evidence from a technician after the sheriff’s office had served warrants.
The device was removed and rendered safe by SLED. An examination is underway and the building has since returned to normal operations.
An investigation led to the arrest of 33-year-old Richard Lewellen who was charged with possessing or making an explosive device. Authorities are working to learn more.
