18-year-old Emir Balat and 19-year-old Ibrahim Kayumi attempted to detonate two apparent explosive devices.
Two suspects are in custody in connection to the New York City terror protest attack.
On Saturday, 18-year-old Emir Balat and 19-year-old Ibrahim Kayumi attempted to detonate two apparent explosive devices. The situations unfolded during a “Stop the Islamic Takeover of New York City” protest and counter-protest near Gracie Mansion, the residence of Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
After his arrest, Balat allegedly told investigators that he and Kayumi wanted to stage an attack exceeding the Boston Marathon bombing that killed three people and injured over 500 others. Both men allegedly made statements referencing ISIS.
The two defendants face federal charges of attempted provision of material support and resources to a designated foreign terrorist organization, use of a weapon of mass destruction, transportation of explosive materials, interstate transportation and receipt of explosives, and unlawful possession of destructive devices. A preliminary hearing is set for April 8 and investigators are still working to learn more.
