Federal Judge Blocks Admin From Banning Foreign Harvard Students
The proclamation cited national security concerns to justify why Harvard could no longer be trusted to host international students.
A federal judge blocked the Trump administration from carrying out plans to ban foreign nationals from entering the U.S. to study at Harvard University.
On Monday, U.S. District Judge Allison Burroughs issued an injunction that extends a temporary order she issued. It prevented the administration from enforcing a proclamation Trump signed.
The proclamation cited national security concerns to justify why Harvard could no longer be trusted to host international students.
It also prohibited foreign nationals from entering the country to study at the Ivy League school or participate in exchange visitor programs.
The proclamation directed Secretary of State Marco Rubio to consider whether to revoke visas of current international students already enrolled at Harvard.
However, Burroughs said that the government’s efforts are misplaced and violate constitutional rights. That includes freedom of expression, speech and thought, which are each safeguarded.
