UNC Gunman Charged For Murder Of School Professor
Authorities are still attempting to navigate the relationship between the two men but it is too early to establish a definitive motive.
We have an update on the fatal shooting that occurred at the University of North Carolina on Tuesday.
Investigators have determined that the incident was a targeted attack on an associate professor in the department of applied physical sciences. Zijie Yan died after being shot by doctoral grad student Tailei Qi who was listed in Yan’s research group.
Authorities are still attempting to navigate the relationship between the two men but it is too early to establish a definitive motive.
Qi has been charged with first degree murder and possession of a weapon on educational property, both felony charges. He is currently being held at Orange County Jail without bail and faces possible additional charges as the investigation continues.
The firearm that was used to conduct the killing has not yet been found. No other injuries were reported.
