President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden traveled to Maui on Monday and met with residents affected by the deadliest wildfires to occur in the U.S. in over a century.
The president toured Lahaina seeing first hand the charred town where 850 people are still unaccounted for. He promised that the federal government would do all it can to assist with recovery efforts.
Biden also referred to what he described as a more than 100-year-old banyan tree that stood amid the wreckage nearby stating that it is burned, but it is still standing. He said, “Trees survive for a reasons. I believe it’s a powerful symbol of what we can and will do to get through this crisis. The fire cannot reach its roots. That’s Maui. That’s America.”
The death toll from the state’s deadliest natural disaster has increased to 114 people while search and rescue missions are still underway.
