North Carolina Lawmakers Override Governor’s Veto

Republican-led state lawmakers across the Nation have sought to restrict the procedure after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade last year.

North Carolina’s Republican-led General  Assembly moved to ban most abortions after 12 weeks, voting to override a veto from Democratic Governor Roy Cooper.

The state House voted 72 to 48 after the Senate voted 30 to 20. A three-fifths vote in both chambers, where Republicans hold supermajorities, was needed to override Cooper’s previous rejection of the measure.

As North Carolina legislators enacted the ban on Tuesday, South Carolina House Representatives were in the midst of an hours-long debate on a 6-week abortion ban bill and an official decision has not been confirmed.
