Loggerhead Sea Turtle Nesting Season Begins Today

Loggerheads are protected under the endangered species act.

South Carolina’s loggerhead sea turtle nesting season begins today. The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources says loggerhead sea turtles lay eggs between May and October. Each one will lay about 120 eggs and after 60 days, the hatchlings emerge from the nest overnight and make their way to the ocean. It’s a reminder not to use flashlights and keep your phones dimmed as sea turtles can be disoriented by artificial light. Oceanfront residents are also reminded not leave lights on at night. Loggerheads are protected under the endangered species act and anyone who causes harm or disturbs a nest can be subject to federal and state penalties.
