Melatonin Labels Mislead Correct Quantity Of The Hormone

Only three of the tested products had an amount within 10% of the labels quantity.

A study revealed that labels on a sleep aid alternative have been presenting misleading information.

Melatonin is a hormone that assists the body’s sleep cycle. It is not regulated as a drug, so the FDA does not have control over ingredient content or accuracy.

Researchers studied 25 gummy products from various brands. Most contained between 74 to over 300% more Melatonin than the labels quantity.

Generally, a safe amount to consume is between 1 and 5 milligrams, or less. The study revealed the quantity of Melatonin in a single serving size was much higher, ranging from 1.3 to 13.1 milligrams.

Only three of the tested products had an amount within 10% of the labels quantity.

When it comes to excess Melatonin consumption, there is no evidence of long-term issues. However, side effects such as trouble breathing, vomiting, and excessive sleepiness can occur from taking too much.

The study was conducted in hopes to bring more awareness to clinicians about the contents of the supplement.
