A New Rail Safety Legislation Was Presented

A Rail Safety legislation was introduced in Congress and if passed it would not allow single-person crews.

The “Association of American Railroads” confirmed that it’s position in favor of one-person crews has not changed.

A Rail Safety legislation was introduced in Congress and if passed it would not allow single-person crews.

The AAR shared their opinion by expressing that it will be more efficient and safe to have engineers responding to problems with trains by driving along the tracks in trucks rather than on board in the cab of the loco-motive.

There is currently no existing legislation that requires both an engineer and a conductor to be on a train.

Union Pacific said the opposition to a two-person crew mandate does not mean the railroads don’t care about safety, but no existing data proves a two-person crew confined to a cab is safer.

CSX said it believes the decision on crew size should be decided in collective bargaining, not through legislation.

Several other major freight railroads have yet to comment on the presented bill including Norfolk Southern.
