Sunday night a standoff in Surfside Beach caused a busy highway to close.

Highway 17 Business near 17th Avenue North just outside of Surfside Beach was closed to traffic in both directions as many officers addressed an active investigation. Community members were urged to avoid the area as well.

Officers were investigating after someone fired a weapon and then barricaded themselves. Police worked to deescalate the situation before gun fire broke out around 1:30a.m.

A witness shared that officials put tear gas in the structure where the suspect was barricaded.

Around 3:15a.m. on Monday morning the incident was reported as resolved.

An officer suffered minor injuries from shrapnel at the beginning of the incident but has since been released from the hospital.

No further information has been released at this time and an investigation is still on-going.

An account on Tik Tok was live streaming the SWAT investigation and had thousands of views as people watched the situation play out.

The Horry County Police Department shared via Twitter that they were aware of the live stream and advised the live-streaming to end as it could have possibly put the lives of others at risk.

The account stopped videoing just five minutes after the HCPD tweet was posted.
