Asteroid Reached Closest Distance To Earth On Record

It flew over the Southern tip of South America nearly 2,200 miles above Earth's surface.

On Thursday, an asteroid made one of the closest approaches to Earth recorded to date.

The asteroid called ‘2023 BU’ is described as the size of a box truck. It flew over the Southern tip of South America nearly 2,200 miles above Earth’s surface.

The distance recorded is well within the orbit of global satellites but NASA announced there was no risk of it striking Earth.

The space agency said, if it were heading for Earth it would have transformed into a fireball once it entered the atmosphere and disintegrated. Possible debris could have fallen to the ground as small meteors.
