Kevin McCarthy Appointed As House Speaker

This speakers race marked the longest contest since 1859.

The U.S. House elected a speaker.

Early Saturday morning after several days of negotiations and 15 rounds of voting, Kevin McCarthy was officially appointed to take the House Speaker position. His election came after a confrontation on Friday night between himself and Representative Matt Gaetz during the 14th round of voting.

Six Republican holdouts all voted “present” on the 15th ballot which gave McCarthy a 216-212 victory needed to secure the position.

This speakers race marked the longest contest since 1859.

After his victory, McCarthy stated as he left the floor, “I’m glad it’s over.”

The full House is expected to reconvene Monday afternoon.
