Leaders in Finland Express Interest in Joining NATO
Finland’s President and Prime Minister have announced their support for joining NATO. The statement from President Sauli Niinistö and Prime Minister Sanna Marin has been expected since the start of the Ukrainian invasion and the Kremlin has responded saying that the move would be a ‘threat to Russia.’ In a joint statement, Niinistö and Marin said “NATO membership would strengthen Finland’s security. As a member of NATO, Finland would strengthen the entire defense alliance. Finland must apply for NATO membership without delay. We hope that the national steps still needed to make this decision will be taken rapidly within the next few days.” The spokesperson for the Kremlin said that Russia would analyze the situation and will work out the necessary measures to ensure it’s own security.
