October Assault Incident Leads to Murder Charges After Victim’s Death in Hospital

The Bennettsville Police Department arrested and charged Don Cook.

A man charged in connection to an assault incident back in October has now been charged with murder. The Bennettsville Police Department arrested and charged Don Cook. Cook was initially charged with assault second degree for an incident that happened on October 1st in Bennettsville. A verbal altercation lead to Cook striking the victim, Michael Pruitt several times with a cane and as a result, Pruitt had to be hospitalized and died on December 10th. His autopsy found that he died of injuries from blunt force trauma. Cook is being held at the Marlboro County Detention Center as he awaits a bond hearing.
