Omicron Spreads Across U.S. and Moderna Says Their Booster Raises Antibodies

Health experts have a warning ahead of the new year.

The Delta and Omicron coronavirus variants are continuing to spread across the U.S. and health experts have a warning ahead of the new year. They’re urging Americans to get vaccinated or boosted to protect themselves and others. The Director of the National Institutes of Health, Dr. Francis Collins has said that the Omicron variant could result in as many as a million new cases a day.

Today, Moderna announced that a larger dose of its covid-19 booster significantly increases antibody levels against the omicron variant. New data suggests 100-micrograms instead of the typical 50-microgram dose increased levels 83-fold. It now falls to u-s public health officials to decide whether the booster shot should be administered at the larger dose.

President Biden is meeting with his covid-19 response team today and he will address the nation tomorrow regarding the latest developments with Omicron. Senators Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Cory Booker of New Jersey have tested positive for the coronavirus. Both are vaccinated, have received boosters and are experiencing mild symptoms.
