4 Tips to Have the Healthiest Dog on the Block

Veterinarians give four tips that add years to your pet's life.

May is National Pet Month.  For your Thursday’s Tips, vets give the top tips for adding years to your pet’s life.  Give them a high quality diet. Those fed quality meals have a shiny hair coat, healthy skin, and bright eyes. It strengthens their immune system, intestinal and mental health, and keeps joints and muscles mobile. Ask your vet which brands are good for your dog.  The skin of salmon makes a high omega dog snack with heart and skin benefits. Be sure it’s fully cooked.  Take your pet to the vet on a schedule. Before you leave their office make the next one, so you get a reminder.  They need their vaccines, heart worm and flea and tick preventions.  A yearly check over could help save their life.  It’s also a good opportunity to ask questions.  It builds a relationship with your vet.  Keep your pet’s mouth clean. Dental disease can be painful and could lead to heart and kidney disease. The most effective way of caring for your pet’s mouth is to brush their teeth at home.  There are a variety of toothbrushes for dogs, including dental treats and toys. Consistent bad breath could be a strong sign of dental problems.  Call your vet right away.  By the way, cats disguise their pain more so than dogs.  It’s important to give them health checkups.
