Four people died and more than 20 were hospitalized after a 40 foot boat overturned yesterday off the coast of San Diego. According to homeland security, 27 people were transported to hospitals with varying degrees of injuries. One person remains in critical condition. A U.S. Customs and Border Protection official said the agency has quote “every indication” that the vessel was being used to smuggle people into the country illegally. The boat was reportedly severely overcrowded when it hit a reef and capsized, and it’s not clear how many passengers and crew were wearing safety gear. Ss of right now, it’s unclear where the people on board originated from but, the person believed to have been operating the boat is now in custody and cooperating with authorities. The Customs and Border Protection said they’ve seen an increase in maritime smuggling attempts and they’re ramping up efforts to intercept such vessels.
