The 7 Types of Rest We Need
A new article on ideas TED.com says there are actually seven different types of rest we need. We need physical rest, either passive or active. Passive includes sleeping or napping. Active means things like getting a massage, meditating, or just laying around. Letting your brain take a break is important too, especially if you work long hours. Ideally, you should get some mental rest every 20 minutes. We need sensory rest before bed, and creative rest, which is kind of like mental rest, but even more focused on silencing your brain. Emotional rest is separating yourself from things that make you feel emotionally overwhelmed, including friends and family. Social rest is just like it sounds, taking some time to be alone and a break from social situations. Finally, we need spiritual rest. That’s about finding a way to feel a larger sense of belonging, love, acceptance, and purpose.
The seven types of rest are detailed in the book Sacred Rest: Recover Your Life, Renew Your Energy, Restore Your Sanity.
