Federal Agents Confirm Iranian, Russian Interference in Presidential Election
Federal agents confirmed Iran and Russia have obtained U.S. voter registration information in an effort to interfere in the presidential election. Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe, alongside FBI Director Chris Wray, made the announcement during a last minute new conference yesterday evening. They said instances of interference include an email scam from Iran. They created fake accounts posing as the far-right group Proud Boys and sent intimidating messages to voters. They’ve also made moves to spread disinformation about voter fraud through a video linked in some of the emails.
There’s also concerns Russia obtained similar voter information however, it’s unclear at this time what they intend to do with it. Ratcliffe said these foreign actors hope to “cause confusion, sow chaos and undermine your confidence in American democracy.” He added Iran’s interference was meant to damage President Trump’s chances, but this claim has yet to be verified. Nearly 38 million total ballots have been cast as of yesterday, a stark contrast to this time during 2016 when only 5.9 million were cast.
