New SCOTUS Ruling Blocks Restrictive Louisiana Abortion Bill

Yesterday, the Supreme Court blocked a controversial Louisiana abortion law in a 5-4 ruling. Chief Justice John Roberts once again sided with the liberal justices in a major win for pro-choice supporters. The law would have essentially closed almost every single clinic in the state of Louisiana by barring doctors from performing the procedure unless they had admitting privileges at nearby hospitals. Those against the law argued this was a veiled attempt to restrict abortion and not medically necessary. The official SCOTUS opinion said the bill was unconstitutional and that there was “evidence…that opposition to abortion played a significant role in some hospitals’ decisions to deny admitting privileges.” Despite the official ruling, there were still justices, including Clarence Thomas, who strongly opposed the decision calling abortion “grievously wrong.” He made it clear he is looking for the court to revisit the “Roe V. Wade” decision.
