Marion County Participating in Childhood Obesity Program

The Marion county coordinating council is participating in a nationwide challenge to fight childhood obesity. According to MCCC chair, Marvin Hemingway, 21.9 percent of children in Marion county are obese. Through the “Build Your Health Challenge”, Marion county will create five food banks where children ages two through four can receive fruits and veggies. The MCCC received $250,000 in grants for the program. They are also partnering with MUSC Marion for the program. Physicians will prescribe children at risk with a healthy food list that they can pick up at the food bank.
