Halloween health warning

Feds warn against costume contact lenses for Halloween

With Halloween just days away, officials are issuing a special warning about decorative contact lenses.

Doctors warn these black-market contacts, usually marketed as “costume” or “colored lenses,” could cause serious injuries to the eye, including infections and loss of vision. Improperly stored or shipped contacts can shelter bacteria, and lead-based materials can leach directly into the eye.

In order to avoid long-term issues, officials and doctors alike recommend a prescription from a doctor. Though just 11% of consumers have worn decorative contact lenses, a majority of those have bought them without a prescription.
