How to avoid post-disaster scams
NICB cautions Carolina residents of rebuilding schemes after Hurricane Matthew
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WFXB) – As Carolina residents recover from Hurricane Matthew, the National Insurance Crime Bureau is working with law enforcement agencies and state officials to warn victims about post-disaster rebuilding scams.
the NICB says that after a disaster, contractors will often go door-to-door to offer clean up, construction or repair services and while most are reputable, many are not. One common scheme is to pocket the payment and never show up for the job, or never complete a job that was started. Another scheme is to use inferior materials and perform shoddy work that is not up to code in order to pocket more profit.
