Panthers McDermott: “Honor to be in Coaching Conversation”
CHARLOTTE, NC (WCCB Charlotte) — Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott won’t say if he will interview for a potential head coaching position during the bye week or if he has even been contacted by an outside team, but if he does, he will do his homework on his potential suitor.
“Not every job is the right job,” McDermott said. “Even though it might be a career goal, not every job is the right job.”
McDermott spoke at Bank of America Stadium on Monday afternoon less than 24 hours after the Panthers dismantled Tampa Bay, 38-10. The Carolina defense added three takeaways Sunday to finish the season with a league best 39 turnovers forced in the 2015 season.

“It’s an honor to be in that conversation. It’s a direct result of the success we have had here,” McDermott said. “Being able to sustain successes is a little bit unique and to do it going through the injuries…it just speaks to how we do things, the players in that room and the character of the men in the room, coaches included.”
McDermott said balancing potential coaching interviews and a divisional round playoff game against a to be determined opponent will not be a distraction.
“At this point I am focused on what we need to do and the task at hand this week and that means self-scout and self-improvement with the defense,” McDermott said.
