The Panthers announced they have signed Robert McClain and placed cornerback Bene Benwikere on injured reserve with a fractured leg.

McClain, 27, was released by New England in their final roster cuts in September. McClain was drafted by Carolina in the seventh round of the 2010 draft and played in 16 games his rookie season, starting two of them. He played in 47 games in Atlanta from 2012-2014 before his training camp stay with the Patriots earlier this season.

With McClain in the fold, the Panthers now have five cornerbacks on the active roster. He joins Josh Norman, Charles Tillman, Cortland Finnegan and Teddy Williams.
