NFL To Review Ankle Twisting Allegations

CHARLOTTE , N.C. —  The NFL will look in to the allegations that Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict intentionally twisted the ankles of Cam Newton and Greg Olsen.

Coach Ron Rivera of the Panthers sent tapes of the incidents to the league office in support of the accusations.

Neither play resulted in a penalty for Burfict, although he did draw two other personal-foul penalties in the game. He was the most penalized Bengal a season ago, eight of which where for unnecessary roughness, and he leads the team in penalties this season.

Burfict has a reputation for “playing on the edge”, and has previously been fined for illegal hits. He has been fined a total of $52,000 for three separate incidents.

Cam Newton had off-season ankle surgery and Greg Olsen injured his ankle against the Bears, but there is no indication in regards to Burfict’s motives.

Burfict could again incur a serious fine, but Olsen believes a suspension is in order.

“Punishment needs to go beyond a fine,” Olsen said on Monday. “Guys like that don’t learn from that stuff. He’s been fined a hundred times for headhunting, and he did it to Kelvin [Benjamin] again. You watch the film; that’s just what he is.”

“At some point, if the NFL wants to really say they care about guys’ safety, they’ve got to start putting guys out for weeks. Me and Cam are lucky we aren’t out for weeks, or Kelvin isn’t out for weeks. If you’re going to start putting guys on other teams out, then the ramifications need to equal that.”
