Stone, Walter Hopkins

Walter “Bunk” Hopkins Stone, age 81, of Lumberton, passed away on Thursday, June 9, 2011 at Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton. He was born in North Augusta, SC on July 27, 1929 to the late William E. Stone, Sr. and the late Julia Mathis Stone. He served in the US Air Force from 1951-1954, a Veteran of the Korean War. He retired from the NC Department of Transportation after more than 30 years of service. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his only brother, William E. Stone, Jr. Mr. Stone is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mary Jean McDonald Stone; his children, Angie Simpson and husband, Phil of Raleigh, NC, Julie Hodges and husband, Mike of Apex, NC and Walter H. Stone, Jr. and wife, Sophia of Cary, NC; his grandchildren, Will and Julian Simpson, both of Raleigh, NC and Christina and Elizabeth Stone, both of Cary, NC. A Graveside service will be held on Saturday, June 11, 2011 at 11:00AM at Meadowbrook Cemetery in Lumberton with Rev. Joe Bounds and Father John Gillispie officiating. A time of visitation will be held on Friday evening, June 10, 2011 from 7:00-8:00PM at Floyd Mortuary & Crematory, Inc., 809 East 5th Street, Lumberton.
