CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Last season was a big test for Panthers quarterback Will Grier.
“It was the first time I had ever been a backup,” said Grier. “There’s a lot of things that go with that that I learned.”
The Charlotte native started in two games last season and took his lumps, throwing four interceptions and zero touchdowns, while the Panthers lost both games.
With the lessons learned from last season and now being able to study under Teddy Bridgewater, Grier feels better equipped to fill the role of a backup QB in the NFL.
“I didn’t do a good job [last season as backup], similar to Teddy in his experience of staying ready,” said Grier. “I think when you’re in that position in any QB room, you can go from the three to the one real quick.” “There’s a lot of things that go with being the backup that I learned.”
Head coach Matt Rhule said that PJ Walker was ahead of Grier in the backup QB battle earlier in camp, but now that Grier had a solid week he’s catching up.
Grier says he’s seeing the field a lot better and is more confident as a rookie.
Rhule has not tipped his hands towards how many QB’s they plan to keep on the roster.
