Pfizer’s Covid-19 Vaccine Effectiveness Fell For Kids During the Omicron Surge

According to data from the New York State Department of Health, the effectiveness of the Pfizer/BioNTech Covid-19 vaccines for children waned quickly during the Omicron surge especially among children ages 5 to 11. Data shows within one month of being fully vaccinated, effectiveness of the Pfizer shots against infection caused by the Omicron variant fell from 68% to just 12% in the 5 to 11 year age group. Effectiveness against hospitalization in that group was also higher but dropped substantially falling from 100% in early December to 48% by the end of January. The study also found that vaccine effectiveness also fell for older children and teens.
