Breakthrough Covid-19 Cases More Likely to Occur in Older Demographic, Those With Underlying Medical Conditions

As of August 30th, 12,908 severe breakthrough Covid-19 cases among fully vaccinated people had been reported to the CDC. Data shows that older adults and those with multiple underlying medical conditions are most at risk of serious illness. As of the end of August about 173 million people had been fully vaccinated which means there’s less than a 1 in 13,000 change of experiencing a severe breakthrough case. According to the CDC, about 70% of breakthrough cases resulting in hospitalization were individuals 65 and older and about 87% of breakthrough cases resulting in death were among those in the same demographic. Unvaccinated adults in the U.S. are 17 times more likely to be hospitalized for the virus than fully vaccinated adults and patients with breakthrough cases tend to be older and more likely to have at least three underlying medical conditions.
