Search and Rescue Continues in California After Navy Helicopter Crashes Off San Diego Coast

5 crew members are unaccounted for after a United States Navy helicopter crashed off the coast of San Diego yesterday. According to the Navy’s 3rd fleet, the helicopter, which was based on the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier ‘crashed into the sea while conducting routine flight operations approximately 60 nautical miles off the coast of San Diego’ around 4:30 pm. Multiple Coast Guard and Navy assets were used during the search and rescue yesterday which began again this morning.

One member was found last night and 5 others remain missing as of this morning, the condition of the rescued crew member is unknown. According to the Navy, Nimitz-Class aircraft carriers are some of the largest warships in the world and support various naval operations and operate aircraft that engage in attacks on targets that threaten free use of the sea.
