U.S. Mexico Border Arrests in June Highest in Decade

The number of people arrested or turned away at the U.S. Mexico border was higher last month than any other month in at least a decade. U.S. Border Authorities encountered 188,000 migrants in June which is up from just over 180,000 in May and brings the total to more than 1 million Customs and Border Protection encounters this fiscal year. They also encountered nearly 56,000 family members and over 15,000 unaccompanied children. The number of migrants at the U.S. Mexico border has been on the up rise since May of 2020 when about 23,000 people were encountered by Customs and Border Protection. June was the highest monthly number since President Biden took office and 34% of the encounters were with migrants who had at least one previous encounter in the last year. Most encounters were of single adults but families and unaccompanied children were up from the previous month.
