President Biden Announces The U.S. Will Be Investing $1 Billion Into FEMA

President Biden announced yesterday that he would be investing $1 billion into the Federal Emergency Management Agency. This comes a year after one of the worst hurricane seasons the U.S. has ever seen with the number of named storms exceeding the average and even setting the record for the most named storms to form in a single year. President Biden noted this during his visit to FEMA headquarters and promised the new funding would help prepare the U.S. in anticipation of the upcoming hurricane and fire seasons that are once again expected to be higher than average.

The $1 billion in funding FEMA will be receiving is double the amount they got last year. The money will mainly be allocated towards the “building resilient infrastructure and communities” program, with a portion going towards disadvantaged communities, states and tribal governments. An official White House statement read “as climate change threatens to bring more extreme events like increased floods, sea level rise, and intensifying droughts and wildfires, it is our responsibility to better prepare and support communities, families, and businesses before disaster…not just after.”
