George Floyd’s Family To Meet With President Biden
Today on the anniversary of George Floyd’s death President Biden is hosting members of his family in Washington D.C. Floyd’s sister Bridget, daughter Gianna and mother Roxie will visit the White House at the invitation of the President and meet with him in private. According to press secretary Jen Psaki ‘he has a genuine relationship with them, and the courage and grace of this family and especially his daughter Gianna Floyd, has really stuck with the President.’ Biden first met with the Floyd family last June when he traveled to Houston to offer condolences ahead of Floyd’s funeral. The President has spoken to the family on several occasions throughout the past year including last month after a jury convicted former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin.
During his joint address to Congress in April, Biden initially made today the goal to pass the ‘George Floyd Justice in Policing Act’ but negotiators are not on track to hit that deadline as it is stalled in the Senate and members of the House will not be returning to Washington until June. The chamber passed it in March but it was never passed by the Senate. Legislation includes setting up a national registry of police misconduct, a ban on racial and religious profiling by law enforcement and an overhaul of qualified immunity.
