House of Representatives to Vote on Establishing a Commission to Investigate Capitol Riots
Today the House of Representatives will vote on legislation to establish an independent commission that will investigate the Capitol riots. The ruling comes as many Republicans try to downplay the violence that occurred in Washington D.C. on January 6th. Over a dozen Republicans in the House of Representatives are expected to support the commission.
The ten person bipartisan panel would investigate the circumstances behind the insurrection. House majority leader Kevin McCarthy is said to be opposed to the panel and Minority Whip Steve Scalise’s office sent a letter to members of the house to advocate against the legislation. The vote marks the end of a four month long negotiation period between Republicans and Democrats as they’re struggled exclusively to agree on the focus and scope of a commission. If it clears the House it will then move to the Senate.
