House Republicans Voted To Remove Rep. Liz Cheney In The House Republican Leadership Role
House Republicans voted to remove Representative Liz Cheney in the house republican leadership role. That vote is in part due to her publicly rejecting former President Donald Trump’s lie that he won the 2020 Presidential election.
Lawmakers ousted Cheney in a vote behind closed doors so there is no tally of those who supported or opposed her. She is expected to be replaced by Representative Elise Stefanik from New York who has emerged as one of Trumps top defenders. Before the vote, Cheney called out Trump and other Republicans who aided his efforts to overturn his loss and said she would “lead the fight to restore our party and our nation to conservative principles.”
She said “We cannot let the former President drag us backward and make us complicit in his efforts to unravel our democracy,” And added “Down that path lies our destruction, and potentially the destruction of our country.” When Cheney criticized Trump, she was booed. Cheney was 1 of 10 Republicans who voted to impeach Trump for the Capitol riot in January.
