A bill to legalize medical marijuana is heading to the desk of Alabama’s Governor. It has bipartisan support and cleared both chambers last night. The house voted 68-34 in favor after a vote on the measure had been blocked by republicans during a nearly nine-hour debate in the chamber earlier in the week on Tuesday night. It allows doctors to prescribe cannabis to patients with certain conditions. recipients could take the drug as a gummy, oil, or cream but not smoke or vape it. Governor Kay Ivey’s press secretary says the Governor is looking forward to thoroughly reviewing the legislation. The move comes as several other states have passed or are attempting to pass similar laws. In Virginia, marijuana possession will become legal on July 1st and in Mississippi residents voted to create a medical marijuana program during the November election. Alabama would be the 37th state to approve of medical marijuana.
