White House Staff, Cabinet Members Resign Following Riot at Capitol

And speaking of resignations, several members of President Trump’s administration have also stepped down. Among the first to quit was First Lady Melania Trump’s chief of staff. She was quickly followed by a slew of others which includes the deputy national security adviser, Trump’s special envoy to Northern Ireland, an assistant attorney general from the justice department, the acting chair of the council of economic advisers, and the deputy assistant secretary of commerce for intelligence and security, as well as a lawyer who worked for the Trump campaign. Yesterday, Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao also became the first Cabinet member to submit her resignation. The wife of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said it had been an honor to serve in her position, but given the president’s role in the events that transpired Wednesday, she did not feel she could continue in her position. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos was next to depart, issuing similar sentiments. It’s likely others have considered the possibility but at this time it’s unclear if anyone else will follow through or wait out the next 12 days.
