President Trump Can’t Promise Peaceful Transfer of Power
During a press briefing yesterday, President Trump was asked if he would commit to a peaceful transfer of power after the election, should it come to that. Here was his response: “Well, we’re going to have to see what happens. You know that I’ve been complaining very strongly about the ballots and the ballots are a disaster….Get rid of the ballots and you’ll have a very … there won’t be a transfer, frankly. There’ll be a continuation.” The president’s answer left Americans confused and divided once more as they try to decipher his meaning. This isn’t the first time he’s hinted he won’t leave office without a fight, suggesting he will contest the results all the way to the Supreme Court should former Vice President Joe Biden be named the winner. The president has also previously joked about running for a possible third term which is unconstitutional. Also concerning to some were the president’s comments on “throwing out the ballots”. He continues to maintain mail-in voting will be rampant with fraud and “disaster”. His latest suggestion has already been met with strong rejection from many, including Senator Mitt Romney who called peaceful transference of power “fundamental to democracy”.
